You have in your life, right now, an amazing array of blessings. Some of these are personal, some are network/friendships/community, and some are our values/beliefs that guide us in our decision making.
Let's start with you.
Using only five key words, identify the five actions that you regularly take, or traits that you regularly exhibits (the way you behave) that define what one of your friends would say about you if asked "how would you describe (your name here) using only five key words?" It is important to consider this from another persons point of view as they often see us as who we really are, not who we believe ourselves to be.
If you are struggling to find words, use the "Key Words glossary that is linked in the grey bar on the right.
Once we have created our list, we need to compare it to something, so how about asking your friends to give you their feedback about your traits or actions that they see?
You could send an email using this type of script:
"I'm doing a goal
setting workshop and one of the first things they have asked us to
do is find out what our five key traits are. Because I trust your
opinion, I would like to ask you for your feedback. What do you
think my five main traits are?
I will be using your thoughts to help me compile a list of skills
that make up my inventory of things I can draw on, to help me
achieve my goals in 2010."
Once you have your five main traits, I want you to get out a long narrow piece of paper

Next, I want you to download the Personal Values sheet (in the grey bar at the right). Once you have this sheet downloaded, select you top five things from the list that you see as the top five things you value the most. Once you have completed that stage, remove two of them. This will leave you with your top three personal values. (use your own values if they don't appear on the provided page). Then transfer these three values to the index card. These are your top personal values and your goal should build upon these values. Your goal should never violate these values.
Once you have your values designated, then add to the card your education and experience (if its professional), your network and any other resources you may have.
This completes step one of your goal plan. Next week we'll tackle Step Two: Creating a Goal that is achievable and successful.
